Materials
- 5 plates
- 5 avocados
- 1 grapefruit
- 1 orange
- 1 lemon
- 1 lime
- 2 knives
- 4 bowls
- Masking tape, ruban tape or Post-it™ Notes
- Plastic wrap
- Box of tissues
Procedure
- Take one avocado. Wash well and place it on a plate. Cut avocado into half with 1 knife. Remove the seed. Label one half “1” and label the other half “2.” This is your control avocado. Rip and stick a piece of tape onto the plate. Label it “Control Group.”
- Repeat step 1 with the remaining 4 avocados. Stick a piece of tape onto each plate. Label the avocados according to what juice you will use on them.
- Cut the lemon into half with your remaining knife. Carefully juice both halves of the lemon with your hands and squeeze the juice into a bowl. Prevent getting any of the juice in your eyes. Dispose of the lemon peels.
- Repeat step 3 with the rest of the citrus fruits and be sure to label each cup according to the fruit.
- Dab each fruit juice onto a different avocado with a tissue. Cut 5 pieces of plastic wrap, each piece a little bigger than the size of the plate. Wrap the each piece of plastics wrap over the plate. Make sure you cover the avocados and don't leave any openings.
- Place the plates in a safe place and leave overnight.
- Place the avocados on the table. Cautiously remove the plastic wrap and avoid touching the avocado.
- Compare and contrast the avocados. Compare the appearances, smells, and textures. Record the data and dispose of the avocados.
